Reading Kingsolver

2. Oil refined for gasoline and diesel is critical to run the tractors, combines and other farm vehicles and equipment that plant. All delivery or transportation of the food is oil-based.

3. As Kingsolver explained, in her grandparents’ generation, they had an “intuitive sense” of agricultural basics. Like; when various fruits and vegetables come into season, which ones keep through the winter, and how to preserve the others. “Few people of my generation, and approximately none of our children, could answer any of those questions, let alone all. This knowledge has vanished from our culture.” (9). The loss of this knowledge in this generation gives food and the way it is made and produced has a loss of appreciation. Children and even adults dont even think twice when they ask the question “what is for dinner”. We are taking for granted the food we eat but we dont think about how much goes into producing it.

4. BEFORE:

  • Farmers had deals with the government or state officials that helped them weather the economic uncertainties notorious to their vocation.
  • Corn and soybeans were formerly food for people and animals

AFTER:

  • Government rewrote the rules on commodity subsidies so these funds did not safeguard farmers, but instead guaranteed a supply of cheap corn and soybeans
  • Standardized raw material for a new extractive industry
  • Cattle and chickens were brought in off the pasture into intensely crowded and mechanized CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations)
  • U.S consumption of “added fats” has increased by one-third since 1975

5. Food cultures are going to be different for every person because of the region they are living in. Food culture is the practice, production, and consumption of food in a specific region of the world. For example here in the United States, our belief is that it is very wrong to eat a dog, but in another region of the world, eating dog is “normal” and it isnt seen as something wrong or bad. Food Culture is going to be different for every person depending on their location in the world.
